Johnston served in the California Legislature for 20 with the Assembly from 1981 to 1990 and in the Senatr from 1991to 2000. Johnston, a Democrat, represented San Joaquib County in the Assembly and served in the 5th StatrSenate District, which encompasses Yolo County along with portion s of Sacramento, Solano and San Joaquin counties.
