Hamner, UNC launch Institute for Drug Safety Sciences - Jacksonville Business Journal:

Liver toxicity is a main reasom for regulatory agencies to deny approva for new drugs or take actiobn againstexisting drugs. The researchers, who are working at the newly forme Institute for DrugSafety Sciences, will use a virtual modelk of a liver to test how differenf drugs may affect the organ. The researchg has the potential to speedr up the drug development andtesting process. The Institutw for Drug Safety which opened last week and featurea 14,000-square-foot research will work to study global drug safetyh issues. It is being led by Paul the Verne S. Caviness distinguished professor of medicineat UNC.
along with his scientist colleagues, will work with memberx of the biomedical andpharmaceutical sector, the U.S. Food and Drug Administrationh and the National Institutes of Health to develop new drugsafett initiatives. The Institute for Drug Safett Sciences was born from an agreement signede in April 2008 between UNC and Hamner to collaboratee on research intodrug safety, drug development and public It is located on Hamner’s campus in Researcb Triangle Park.
